Understanding college acceptance rates

College acceptance rates can be an overwhelming part of the college admissions process. What do those percentages mean, and how might they impact your application? It may seem like college acceptance rates don’t tell you much. However, they can play a key role as you build your college list.

College acceptance rates depend on several factors. These can include the number of applicants in a given year, the number of spots available for new students, the college’s standardized testing policy or standards, any GPA requirements, and the school’s overall admissions process. Because of these factors, a strong candidate at one school may not be what another school desires. In other words, just because you’re accepted into one school with a low acceptance rate does not mean you will get into every school with a similar acceptance rate.

We know that college acceptance rates can seem confusing. However, don’t let college acceptance rates overwhelm you. Instead, think of them as a set of guiding statistics. Acceptance rates can help you craft your college list and determine which schools may be a good fit for you.
