Virginia Tech wants to see that students are inclusive and take action against bias, discrimination, and exclusion. Reflect on a situation of exclusion and how you reacted to it. The key here is to be genuine. You don’t need to be a hero, just honest and reflective.

You’ll also need to reflect on how the situation affected you. What did you learn from it? How has it affected your life since? While the situation doesn’t need to be dramatized for effect, it does need to be meaningful to you.

Be sure to do the following when responding to this prompt.

Explain a specific situation of exclusion. Mention who was being affected and what was happening.

Mention your role or the action you took. Be sure to mention what exactly you did: speak up, educate others, seek professional support, check on the person being excluded, find resources to educate others or help, etc.

Discuss the end result. Specify how the situation was resolved or ended. You can also mention how it affected how you’ve chosen to act since.

Reflect on how the situation shaped you. Ideally, discuss what you learned and how you’ll bring this new perspective into your future (namely, at Virginia Tech).

• Do you focus more on your action or role in the experience and reflect on how its shaped you?

Writing the Virginia Tech Supplemental Essays: Prompt 3

When choosing your topic to write about for this Virginia Tech supplemental essay, you can discuss being a role model through one of several avenues: influencing others, leadership, resolving a dispute, or contributing to group goals. You have a lot of freedom when answering the Virginia Tech essay prompts!

Think about a situation in which you took an active role in a group setting among peers, adults, or your family. In your Virginia Tech essays, highlight how your leadership demonstrates your problem-solving abilities and other character traits.

Virginia Tech does not expect that every leader has a title.
