Five College Consortium
When looking at colleges in Massachusetts, you may have seen the Five College Consortium. Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, Amherst College, Hampshire College, and UMass Amherst are located within ten miles of each other in Western Massachusetts and make up the Five College Consortium. This group of universities was founded in 1914 with the goal of a joint education program for the Pioneer Valley.

UMass Amherst
UMass Amherst is the only public university within the Five College Consortium. In fact, it is the largest public research institution in New England. Unlike the other schools in the Five College Consortium, UMass Amherst has a large student body of about 24,000 students.
Hampshire College
