Relatedly, NYU considers itself a global university and encourages students to engage with communities beyond New York City. With 11 academic centers located around the world, NYU proves to be an excellent choice if you are considering studying abroad.

Is NYU a top university?

When it comes to New York alone, NYU is certainly considered a top college in New York, sitting just below the Ivies, Cornell and Columbia.

What is considered a top university is subjective, but for the purpose of this article, we are going to judge NYU based on its ratings and tier ranking. Based on these criteria, NYU is certainly a top university.

The New York University ranking is very impressive at #25, and the New York University ranking in the world is also impressive at #31. What are college rankings?

We’ve discussed the New York University rankings and NYU University ratings. Next, let’s look at what college rankings are and what they mean. That way, you can make an informed decision about whether NYU and other top schools belong on your college list.

College rankings are lists of the best colleges and universities according to certain key indicators. Different sources will use different metrics to rank schools. College rankings—including the NYU rankings—are subjective. Each source prioritizes certain attributes such as alumni outcomes, academic programs, and earning potential.

Among the most trusted sources are the U.S. News college rankings, the Wall Street Journal college rankings, and Forbes college rankings. These rankings will shift a bit each year depending on the data that each school reports. However, across all of these lists, you’ll notice that the New York University ranking remains high.

Reliable New York University Rankings

Now that you have some background info on NYU rankings, NYU university ratings, and NYU rankings in the world, let’s dive deeper into each reliable source for New York University rankings.

When it comes to Forbes college rankings, U.S. News college rankings, and the Wall Street Journal college rankings, we know that we can trust the judgment of these organizations. However, it is important to remember that they each weigh key indicators differently. This is why the NYU rankings differ based on the source you use. So, depending on the source, you might see a slightly different New York University ranking.

Although these sources weigh things differently, they tend to focus on the same key factors. These sources analyze things like outcomes, financial resources, job placement, and alumni salaries. Both U.S. News and the Wall Street Journal have a heavy emphasis on outcome, whereas Forbes has the heaviest emphasis on alumni salary.

Explaining the wide range

This explains the large contrast between the NYU ranking in Forbes at #46, compared to the NYU ranking of #25 in U.S. News and the NYU ranking of #26 in the Wall Street Journal. According to the Wall Street Journal, NYU tends to leave its students with debt that is difficult to pay off. This could relate to career opportunities for NYU students as well as the school’s high tuition costs.

Still, as you look at the NYU ranking across these sources, you’ll notice that it remains impressively high. And, of course, you should think about more than the New York University rankings as you build your college list. While the New York University rankings can tell you about the school’s prestige, they won’t give you all the information you need to decide whether NYU is the right fit for you.

Some college rankings might also be more helpful than others. For instance, if you’ve chosen a major and want to know how NYU’s programs compare, you might look at the New York University ranking for computer science or the NYU ranking for engineering.

NYU Ranking vs. Columbia University Ranking

NYU Ranking

Next, let’s compare the NYU ranking to the Columbia ranking.

Aside from the obvious fact that Columbia University is an Ivy League school, there are many other ways in which we can compare New York University rankings and Columbia University rankings. Columbia University’s rankings exceed the New York University rankings. Unlike NYU, Columbia ranks within the top twenty schools on each list, sitting at #18 on U.S. News college rankings and #16 on the Wall Street Journal college list, as well as an impressive #6 on Forbes college rankings.

However, it is important to note that Columbia University’s ranking has drastically fallen after Columbia University confirmed allegations that the university reported incorrect information in order to rank higher on these lists. Given this data, CU and NYU can be viewed in a very similar light when it comes to academics and student quality of life.

Both Columbia and NYU have an A+ rating, with Columbia scoring slightly higher in athletics and campus appearance. Surprisingly, NYU costs more than Columbia on average for its students, with less student aid awarded each year. Given this information, it is important to consider what type of aid you might need when narrowing down your college selection.
